Refrigeration failures in Mandarin divide cleanly into two groups: the ones that are genuinely a fault in the appliance, and the ones that are the room the appliance is standing in. A built-in here works against a long warm season, a condenser grille that collects debris for most of the year, and doors opened into humid air. A good part of what we are called out for starts there rather than in the sealed system.
The ice maker produces more calls than anything else on a built-in, and the complaints arrive in a small number of shapes: short or hollow cubes, cloudy cubes, a bin that never fills, or a sheet of ice fused across the top of the mould. From the front of the appliance those look like four different faults. They are usually the same handful of causes arriving in a different order.
We work through them like this.
Is it switched on, and is the shut-off arm free? An arm resting on a bag of frozen food stops production completely and costs nothing to correct. It is first on the list because it is the whole answer often enough to be worth the thirty seconds it takes.
What is the compartment actually holding? Making ice is a temperature process before it is a plumbing one. The mould has to reach a low enough temperature for the harvest cycle to begin at all. A freezer running a few degrees warm gives you small cubes, stretched cycles and a bin that never fills — the same symptoms as a failing fill valve, and no valve will correct them.
How much water arrives, and how fast? Fill is timed rather than measured on most machines: the valve opens for a set number of seconds and whatever arrives in that time becomes the cube. Anything that restricts flow — a shut-off that was never fully opened, a supply line kinked behind the cabinet when the unit was pushed back, a blocked inlet screen — makes cubes short or hollow without the valve itself being at fault.
Then the valve. A valve that no longer closes completely lets the mould overfill, and that is the fused sheet across the top of the bin that people describe as the ice maker jamming. A valve that no longer opens fully does the opposite. Both are replacements rather than repairs, because the sealing surface is the part that has worn.
Then the harvest side. The mould is warmed for a moment so the ice releases and the ejector can sweep it into the bin. A mould heater that has failed, or a thermostat or thermistor reading wrong, produces an appliance that fills and freezes but never harvests. So does a control board that took a storm transient. Which of those it is has to be measured, because the symptom on its own does not distinguish them — and fitting a module without establishing that buys you the same call again in a month.
A built-in refrigerator rejects its heat through a condenser at the top or bottom of the cabinet, behind a grille. In this part of Florida that grille is pulling in lint, pet hair and pollen for most of the year, and in spring it pulls in a great deal of it at once.
A blanketed condenser does not fail dramatically. It just makes the compressor run longer for the same result, so the unit runs nearly continuously, the kitchen gets warmer near it, and the fresh food compartment starts drifting up on hot afternoons. Cleaning the condenser and confirming the condenser fan is actually turning is the first thing we do on any warm-cabinet call, before a gauge goes anywhere near the system.
A refrigerator compartment that is warm while the freezer is still fine is almost never a refrigerant problem. Most of the time it is airflow: the evaporator fan has stopped, or the evaporator has iced over because a defrost component quit and the air can no longer get through the coil.
We check whether the fan runs, whether the coil is clear, and whether the defrost cycle is completing, in that order. Water pooling under the crisper drawers usually belongs to the same story — a drain line that has frozen or clogged, so defrost water backs up into the cabinet instead of leaving it.
When the fault genuinely is in the sealed system, that work requires EPA Section 608 certification, which our technicians hold. That is a federal requirement for handling refrigerant and nothing to do with any manufacturer programme.
A sealed-system diagnosis takes longer than a component fault because it has to be done by measurement rather than inference, and because the honest answer is sometimes that the repair is not worth what the appliance is worth. You will get that answer in writing along with the alternative, not after the parts arrive.
A door that no longer pulls itself shut on the last inch is either out of alignment or has a gasket that has gone hard. A gasket that does not spring back when you press it is not sealing, however clean it looks, and a marginal seal on a humid Mandarin afternoon means the compartment runs a long defrost cycle every few hours trying to keep up.

Water pooled under the crisper drawers about once a week. He flushed a blocked defrost drain and fitted the clip that stops it icing over again. Simple fix, explained as he went, and the pooling has not come back.
