Viking dishwasher repair

A dishwasher does four things in one cabinet: it fills to a level, throws water at a velocity, heats it, and pumps it back out. Nearly every complaint we take belongs to one of those four, and telling them apart is a matter of watching a cycle rather than reading a code off a display.

That is the whole method on this appliance. We run it, watch what it does at each stage, and only then say what needs replacing — because a wash complaint and a drain complaint and a heating complaint all end up described the same way at the door: “it is not cleaning properly any more.”

The top rack goes first

Spray arm holes do not clog all at once. They narrow from the outside in as deposits build on the rim of each jet. Because the upper arm is fed through a longer, narrower path and has to throw water further up, it loses effective pressure before the lower arm does.

So the classic symptom is a top rack that stops getting clean while the bottom rack is still fine. People usually change detergent first. That does not help, because nothing is wrong with the chemistry — the water is simply not arriving with enough velocity to reach the top of the glasses.

We pull the arms, check every jet, look at the feed tube where it clips to the back wall for a split or a loose connection, and check the filter and inlet screen at the same time. It is a mechanical problem with a mechanical answer.

White film that will not rinse

Film on glassware is a different failure from poor washing, and it is worth separating the two causes before anything is quoted.

The first cause is chemistry that is not being helped. Rinse aid exists to break the surface tension so water sheets off the load instead of beading and drying in place, and a final rinse that never reaches temperature leaves the same marks whatever the detergent is. Before we quote a part on a filming complaint we check that the rinse aid reservoir is dispensing, that the level is being consumed between visits, and that the final rinse is actually getting hot.

The second is the supply itself. JEA publishes tap-water hardness by ZIP code and 32223 comes in at 254 parts per million, so a deposit that returns after every cycle and scratches off with a fingernail is mineral out of the water rather than a fault in the machine. That is a maintenance question — filters, periodic cleaning, and in some houses treatment ahead of the appliance — and it is not something a new pump corrects. We will say so plainly rather than sell you a part for it.

Standing water

Water left in the sump at the end of a cycle is a drain problem, and there are only a few places it can be. The filter and sump can be obstructed. The drain pump can be jammed or dead. The drain hose can be kinked behind the cabinet where it was pushed when the unit was slid in. Or the high loop that keeps sink water from flowing back into the machine was never installed.

That last one is common in older Mandarin kitchens where a dishwasher has been swapped into an opening that has been swapped before. The connection at the disposer or the sink tailpiece is the first thing we look at, because it is the only one that costs nothing to correct.

Cycles that run much longer than they used to

A cycle that has stretched from an hour and a half to three hours is usually a heating problem rather than a control problem. These machines hold the cycle open until the water reaches temperature, so anything that slows the heating extends everything downstream of it.

We check element continuity and the thermostat first, then how hot the water is at the tap nearest the machine, and then how far the dishwasher sits from the water heater — a long uninsulated run means the first fill arrives cool and the element has to make up the difference every time. Where a machine has been plumbed to a cold supply during a renovation, which happens, it heats everything from ambient and the cycle time never comes back down until that is corrected.

Doors that drop

A professional dishwasher door is heavy, and it is held at any angle by springs and cables running down each side of the tub. When a cable frays or a spring loses tension the door stops hovering and starts falling, which is both a nuisance and a hazard to shins and toes.

Springs are replaced in pairs. One new spring pulling against one tired one twists the door in its opening and puts load back on the hinges.

Drying

Dishes that come out wet are usually a heat problem or a rinse aid problem, not a fan problem. We check element continuity, the thermostat, and the rinse aid dose before anything else, and we check what is being loaded — a full rack of plastic will come out wet in any machine, because plastic does not hold enough heat to evaporate what is on it.
